Donner un ordre (an order) ou une instruction (an instruction)

On utilise :

  • The imperative (verb stem)
  • sequencing expressions (first (ly) – second (ly) – third (ly) – then after that – finally – etc)

Example : 

  1. Firstly choose the words and then complete the sentences.
    Premièrement, choisis les mots et puis complète les phrases.
  2. Don't switch on the TV.
    N'allume /n'allumez pas la télé.
  3. Be on time at the meeting.
    Sois / Soyez à l'heure à la réunion.

Donner un conseil (giving advice)

On utilise :

  • should /shouldn't + base form
  • ought to / ought not to + Verb
  • to advise + verb+ ING / to advise + object + to- infinitive
  • try to + verb
  • be careful to + verb
  • had better (not) + verb
  • think twice about + verb+ ING

Example : 

  1. You should talk to the head teacher about it.
    Tu devrais en parler au directeur.
  2. You had better not waste your time.
    Tu ferais mieux de ne pas perdre ton temps.
  3. I advise leaving before it gets dark.
    Je conseille de partir avant qu'il ne fasse nuit.

Faire une suggestion (making a suggestion)

On utilise :

  • What /How about + Verb + ING………….?
  • What would you say to …………
  • Why don't you ………..?
  • Why not + base form……….?
  • Let's + base form …………
  • Shall I/we + verb ……..?
  • Can't / couldn't we + verb……..?
  • subject + to suggest + verb + ING
  • Subject + that + subject + base form

Example : 

  1. Why don't you call back later ?
    Et si vous rappelez plus tard ?
  2. How about working together.
    Que dirais-tu de travailler ensemble ?
  3. Let's meet after the course to share the tasks.
    Retrouvons-nous après le cours pour se répartir les tâches.
